Woodley House, Inc.
Community-based housing and support services for the mentally ill. A leader in mental health treatment & recovery for over 50 years!
Woodley House provides safe,
community-based housing and clinical services for the mentally ill -
that next step or ‘step-down’ toward independence from hospitals,
institutions or shelters. Our housing options in neighborhoods
throughout Washington, DC, include temporary crisis care,
transitional and long-term supported independent living. Our
treatment program provides psychiatric monitoring and comprehensive
support services to help over 300 mentally ill clients a year (both
private and publically-funded) work toward recovery and a return to
the community.
Consumers of our services are important and integral members of their treatment teams, a partner in creating their own recovery plans, and are always treated with dignity and respect. Our programs are designed to help consumers move, at their own pace, toward independence with appropriate support services to prepare them toward return to the community. For example, one of our consumers, Sarah,* is part of our Supported Independent Living Apartment Program, working at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital and volunteering at the Library of Congress. Daniel* was diagnosed with mental illness in his early 20’s but graduated from a university with a Master’s Degree, becoming a lecturer at a Boston university. After a set-back, he entered Valenti House but has now moved to his own apartment and is looking forward to returning to his profession.
(*Names have been changed to protect privacy.) These are just two of our many residents who are working to change their lives and return to family, friends and the community.
Woodley House works closely with the Department of Mental Health and other mental health agencies to provide continuity of care for our consumers. Funded by government grants and fees, as well as private foundations and individual donations, Woodley House is dedicated to serving those struggling to recover from mental illness. Over 300 of our friends and supporters
joined us for the 15th Annual Woodley House Movie
Benefit on December 8, 2011 and it was a wonderful
opportunity to kick off the holiday season! We began the evening
with a buffet reception at Spices Restaurant before crossing
the street to the AMC Loews Uptown Theater for a special,
advanced screening of Warner Brothers Pictures’ New
Year’s Eve, directed by Gary Marshall and starring
an ensemble cast headed by Robert DeNiro and Halle Berry. CNN
Special Correspondent (and Woodley House Board Member) Dana
Bash served as Master of Ceremonies, presenting our Donald A.
Brown Rose Award to The Honorable Jane Harman,
whose remarks upon receiving the award were personal, warm and
inspiring. All proceeds from this event went directly to benefit
Woodley House’s programs to help mentally ill adults work toward
independence and a return to productive lives in the community.
Special thanks go to Warner Brothers’
Pictures for allowing us to screen their film, and to our
business community for their support, including our Host Committee
Patron, Teva Pharmaceuticals, as well as the Goodyear Tire
& Rubber Company, PNC Bank, John Marshall Bank,
Johnson, Lemon & Company, Coca-Cola Company and Generic
Pharmaceutical Association. And of course, our gratitude to our
Event Founding Chair, Mary Margaret Valenti and her daughter,
Courtenay Valenti, who worked so hard to make the evening
possible. Please see our Events Page to learn more about this
event and those who made it so special.
It was a great night and we hope that you
can join us for our 16th Annual Movie Event
next year!

Speaking of Woodley House …
"Woodley House has been the model for recovery for years, emphasizing dignity and function” Former First Lady Rosalynn Carter at the 50th Anniversary Woodley House Conference in October 2008.
"Over the years, we have learned that individuals need what is known as a continuum of care … Woodley House is a facility that has become a model for the nation for this continuum of care that it provides to those who are homeless and mentally ill.” Former Vice President Al Gore, Jr. at the 40th Anniversary Woodley House Conference in 1998.
Before coming to Woodley House I was ashamed to let people know about my mental illness. I thought they would treat me differently - staff at Woodley House never did this. I was always viewed first and foremost as a person. They listened to me and I appreciate that more than words can express.
Former Woodley House consumer.
